Saffire, the Uppity Blues Women

Live And Uppity

Alligator

The Uppity Blues Women have always put a nice twist on the classic sweaty sound of blues by adding some of that folky feminist funk that Ellen fans around the world are so fond of. It is very cool to hear female blues artists, and these muchachas are no exception, with their modern hip factor. The three divas who make up the group (piano, bass, guitars… all acoustic) do an excellent job of pigeonholing feminist music into that folk category with this live album.

But seriously, this IS really good music. Blues, Folky, Feminist, and Fun. You can’t help but have a good time with sounds and songs like these. At times they get heavy with issues, covering stuff like spouse abuse and bitchiness, to having a blast with cuts about gettin’ busy with young men and having a “Silver Beaver.” Need they say more? No, but they did, and it turned my tummy to hear the group tell the audience about their gray pubic hairs. But I still had fun, and you will too, with these melodic bluesy tunes.
