Even More Original Raw Soul

Various Artists

Instinct

As near as I can tell, this is a compilation of new artists performing old-skool soul/funk. If it weren’t for gMonkey pointing out that the production on these was too sharp and up-to-date for those old records, I’d still be wondering about the freshness dating. Make no mistake – this is no watered-down tribute to the sway and swagger of the originals. This is it, the chicken-neckin’, torso-jigglin’, booty shakin’ GENUINE ARTICLE. A wide variety of styles are presented, from Bobby Byrd’s expansive gravelly yowl to Tony Cook’s chikiting guitar and thumping bass groovalicious concoctions. A special note goes to Soul Quality Quartet, whose virulently dancy “Hepcat” belies the band members’ last names – Ingvarsson? Leijonhufvud? Scandinavian Soul… go figure. A must-have for any collection. Instinct Records, 26 W. 17th St. #502-A, New York, NY 10011
