If you’re looking for a female version of Type O Negative, look no further. Lacuna Coil have the dark, gothic passion, the heaviness, and the “passion.” (That is, I don’t know how much passion enters into the Type O Negative equation; it’s weighted real high in Lacuna Coil, though).
Lacuna Coil are a three-piece hailing form somewhere in Italy, if I read the notes correctly, and have kicked around for about four years or so under names like “Sleep of Right” and “Ethereal.” Their current name mean “empty spiral,” which I take to be an interpretation of the madness underlying all goth people. “No Need To Explain,” the first song, blasts out with tremendously powerful guitars which meet up with this woman’s voice and perfectly matched keyboards. It’s really haunting, yet the music sounds nearly hair-metal at times (… just like Type O… ). “The Secret… “ is a crunching, yet sorrowful song featuring a male-female vocal war. “Soul Into Hades” appears to be about someone going to Hell. “Falling” is a chilling, very slow – ethereal- tune about death, it has to be about death. Boy, was it depressing. The final song, “A Ghost Between Us,” is a near-perfect blend of Type O Negative and, say, Bauhaus.
In the end, I think all the goth folks and the experimenters out there will want to check out Lacuna Coil, as they’re not relying on any fancy electronics or drowning out all the music in percussive bass like many of the “goth” bands I’ve seen, who just turn everything up to eleven and rely on the wispy voice of their female singer.
