Christopher “Hammerhead” Schlegel

Piano Concertos No. 1 & No. 2

Truth Against the World

Here is what Christopher Schlegel has to say about these pieces of music: “‘Piano Concerto No. 1’ is a historical reference of sorts. Movement 1 is what I learned and loved about the precise structure of the Classical Era. Movement 2 represents the grand and flowing Romantic Era. Movement 3 is not exactly ‘Modern’ as it was and is, but rather, as Modern should have been. After studying what has been done before, I now step firmly into the future of music. And more importantly, into what I will make that future by the development of a New Universe of Musical Direction. ‘Piano Concerto No. 2’ is completely Futuristic Romanticism.”

The most interesting composition on this disc is definitely “Piano Concerto No. 2.” It’s interesting how Schlegel’s computer compositions are becoming more and more dissonant as time goes on. This stuff can really twist your ear around if you think of it in a strict little classical box. Over the years, as I have followed his progress, his music has gotten more and more unique sounding, and by now his music very much expresses his personality: that “Frustrated but Happy” atmosphere… He writes music with the same attitude that he drives his pickup truck around. I enjoy this music much more than his old work, as it features one of my favorite instruments, even if it’s computer sequenced. There are some extremely wicked piano runs… Track 4, “Birth,” is my favorite piece here. Awesome. Those pounded out chords are just insane. A thousand thumbs up.
