Maledictions is a mixed bag. When Grand Mal decide to rock out, they rock out hard, the kind of sonic aggression that makes you want to break things. Electronic wizardry from Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips) keeps Grand Mal from teetering off-balance and degenerating into just another guitar rock band with catchy hooks. The clever loops and keyboard touches behind tracks like “Whole Lotta Nothing” transform them into something that could power through radio charts while maintaining my respect. Catchy in a very subtle way.
