Extreme

Music From The Motion Picture

Due out later this summer, Extreme is just as it sounds: a movie that glorifies extreme outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing, and surfing, among others. To top it all off, Extreme was filmed in the IMAX format, which promises to be very cool as long as you have access to an IMAX theater. What is not so typical is the soundtrack. Since I hadn’t heard many of the bands listed on the album, I assumed it would be a celebration of punk and heavy metal, much like the advertising that caters to today’s younger generation. To my surprise, the music on this album is a combination of ambient electronica, tribal, and nature sounds, mixed with acoustic guitars. Soulfood has a strong presence on the soundtrack, with a total of 6 tracks. Their songs set the mood for the album, complete with atmospherics and female vocals that are comparable to Enigma. Other contributors include Brand New Heavies, Morcheeba, Opus III, Closedown, Afro Celt Sound System, and Better Daze. The only song that is out of place is Brand New Heavies’ “Dream on Dreamer.” It is an upbeat, pop song that has no place among the rest of this music. Aside from that minor detail, this is a great disc to play when you’re ready to relax and unwind.
