The Mist

Gottverlassen

Pavement

Oh, to relive the glory days of Sodom, Kreator, and Celtic Frost…That’s what too many retro-death-thrashers are pining after these days, and with precious few bands as Destroyer 666, Angelcorpse, and Ritual Carnage, frankly, it’s bringing the scene down, down to the depths of modern black metal oversaturation. Then along comes Brazil’s the Mist with Gottverlassen , the band’s fourth album, to erase some of the genre’s sterility. Though casual metalheads might have a hard time locating the aforementioned kings’ influence on Gottverlassen , the album is essentially death-thrash, but little among the record’s grooves smacks of “retro.” Chalk that up to old-old-school Sepultura guitarist Jairo Guedz, whose repetitive, crushing industrial-metal riffs hypnotize the listener just long enough for a killer solo or ripping hyper-thrash workout to kick in. But the Mist isn’t so crusty as to sound completely like a mainstay on Combat Records, circa ‘86 – Beneath The Remains part II the Mist may not be, but the band’s future is bright enough to suggest otherwise. Thrash to the death!
