Doc, It Hurts When I Do This…

I just saw your review on our GrooveGrass101 album. Sorry you didn’t dig it. I just got off the phone with Doc Watson a little earlier. He says he never said he wished he’d never been on that album. I know he wouldn’t lie to me, I’ve been hanging out with him since I was 8 years old. Where did you guys get your info on that?

Thanks,

David Whited responds: In reviewing the GrooveGrass 101 recording in the March 1999 issue, I pulled a quote from memory that quoted Doc Watson as saying that this was the only recording that he wished he hadn’t done. I had recalled reading an interview in _No Depression_magazine where I thought he had made a quote to this effect. In the weeks since I was challenged on this quote, I have been unable to find that particular issue of the magazine to back my statement up. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just as well. I have the utmost respect for Doc Watson as an artist and a gentleman, and if he says he didn’t say this, I will take his word for it. The only explanation I can offer is that I may have associated the quote with the wrong recording. I offer my apology, and will see that the quote is removed from the on-line review of this recording.
