Man, I don’t know what to make of this. I mean, we’re talking about a punk rock band that’s got the nads to cover the MC5’s “Teenage Lust” and from whom a straight line could be drawn to the Dickies, and yet they’ve included a whole lot of youth and family services info with the CD.
Since they’re my introduction to New Mexico Punk Rock, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
“A Lie and A Cheat” begins the album with a blast. It’s fast and loaded with wobbly keyboards. “Straight to the Office” and “Tired of You, Sick of Me” (great title!) seem to excoriate those people (school boards? parents groups?) that seek to force “us” to conform. This is what I’m getting from the record! Songs like “All My Friends Are Ghosts” and “Dead Afterwards” are the products of disturbed, plagued minds!
“Monsters,” “Schoolboy,” and “Full Moon Blackout” are about striking out with girls because you’re “different.” You know, seeing as the kids these days are getting it no matter what they look like, I wonder about this stuff… Then again, looking at the band, it’s clear they’re writing about stuff that happened a loooong time ago.
Lyrically, they write songs much closer to what you’d expect from bands like, oh, I don’t know, moperockers, yet they’re music blazes with punk rock fire and brimstone. I am confused. Nevertheless, the album is addictive with the three chords and punk keyboards. http://www.scaredofchaka.com/
