If you’re going to be a heavy-handed producer, you better be a darn good one. Fortunately, Dave Fridman (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) is one of the best, and Home’s wandering attention works well with Fridman’s occasional bombastic pop touches. Recorded in upstate New York, it’s equal measures Northern intelligentsia and Southern Charm, especially on tracks like “Burden” where the Allman Brothers finale is backed by a string section. Overdone as it may sound, there’s never a shortage of sincere moments, and the album concludes with a mighty fine album closer in “Let It Overcome You.”
