Rick Holmstrom

Gonna Get Wild

Tone-Cool

“I know what’s ailing you. It’s love you need.” Sound advice from guitarist Rick Holmstrom on his solo CD, Gonna Get Wild. Rick is the guitarist for the L.A. blues band Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. Gonna Get Wild is his second solo CD, and one that exemplifies his mastering of the old ’50s style swing and blues sound. The CD contains thirteen songs, eight of which feature Rick’s smooth vocals. Almost all feature his fuzz-tone guitar playing.

Although all the songs are blues-based, every one is upbeat and enjoyable. They are tunes that will leave you humming happily for the rest of the day. You may even find a little more spring in your step after a listen. Each song highlights Rick’s guitar stylings without drowning you out with hot licks and nasty riffs. The heavy fuzz is never louder than the accompanying horns or piano, and adds an interesting element to this selection of jump blues and swing. Gonna Get Wild is a wonderful, danceable treat that will leave you twirling your dance partner by the stereo ‘til dawn.
