Steve Von Till

As the Crow Flies

Neurot

Extremely moody, and depending on your state of mind, either unnecessarily depressive or revelatory. The leaden vibe on this disc repelled me at first, but has since sneakily lodged itself in some dusty corner of my brain. Von Till from Neurosis takes his acoustic guitar out to the desert until the heat and loneliness has him hallucinating. The results are very reminiscent of the untouchable Sol Invictus: dark, stark, and somehow comforting. The addition of cello and violin on some tracks point toward more dense orchestration as a possible next step for this project. File with Black Heart Procession in the “beautifully despondent” section.
