Greta Lee

You Must Be Present to Win

Let’s Roll

In recent months, I’ve found myself on a pretty strong country music kick. Artists like Freakwater, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, and Shelby Lynne have been wafting from the speakers at home and in the car. The disc that has been filling the air around me recently is the sumptuous You Must Be Present to Win from Greta Lee. Lee has a sound that, while a nice alternative to much of what is coming out of Nashville, isn’t really alternative. You can hear Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and the ghosts of countless, nameless, honky tonk singers pulsing through her music. Greta Lee has a voice made for country music. She has a touch of twang and a ton of character in her voice that makes her songs absolutely come to life, I sear on some song you can almost smell the cigarette smoke and stale beer.
