Freeloader

Custom/10

self-released

Rockin’ like The Faces, soulful as a late night jam in Memphis, New York City’s Freeloader plays standup music in a largely laying down world. Creating a sound far larger than a trio should be able to, Freeloader is music for the joy of sound’s sake. Guitarist/vocalist Scott Sinclair knows how to put the song first, and still come off as an emotive guitar picker. The opening cut, “W.I.P.,” stumbles and struts not unlike a swampier Marah or perhaps a hyper-charged version of The Jayhawks. The songs quickly find grooves that might appeal to the jam band crowd, without resorting to the dreaded 15-minute per cut law that such music sometimes requires. “Lemonade” really sounds like a lost cut from Sticky Fingers – tasty guitar and background vocals that sound recorded in a church, all atop a bed of Stones swagger. Custom/10, just like its four-wheeled namesake, cruises just fine.
