Sons of the Pioneers

Symphonies of the Sage

Bloodshot Revival

The Sons of the Pioneers are probably most famous as the band that Roy Rogers got his start in. They recorded such country classics as “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds” and “Cool Water.”

An early-‘40s sojourn in Chicago had them regularly appearing on the WLS Barn Dance radio show. Transcription recordings from these sessions have just now been released on the Bloodshot Revival/Sounders imprint.

Symphonies of the Sage is a loving set of 25 recognizable and obscure songs, most written by the Sons themselves – including Bob Nolan’s true classic, “Cool Water.” The Sons’ work borders on the edge of kitsch, but this collection of gems is so good it bounds over to the sublime. Novelty numbers, nostalgic paeans, and catchy ditties all conspire to an essential western mythos – a myth that lives in the voices of Bob Nolan, Tim Spencers and Lloyd Perryman, the Sons of the Pioneers.
