Global Trancemissions_02: Ibiza

Moonshine

With the Winter Music Conference’s overwhelming dance-oriented vibes still resonating in my psyche, it is with perfect timing that a new Ferry Corsten mix arrives at my doorstep. The “Flying Dutchman,” as he’s labeled by people who like doing those things, once again carries his trance-riddled fervor to a more tropical environment, the Balearic dance mecca of Ibiza.

But don’t expect the frothy, sun-soaked environment to cloud Corsten’s judgment. Thankfully, the man knows how to play to my tastes, regardless of the climate. Adding a bit more tranquil ambience to his nonstop straight beat grandeur, including remixes of Delerium (no, not “Silence” thankfully) and even his own production-inclined alter ego, System F, Corsten once again solidifies his status in the upper echelon of international trance DJs. Despite the now cliched, epic tendencies (dramatic vocals, rippling synth lines) of trance that many in the culture hate, Corsten balances it all with a tight ear and hand, creating another seamless mix that barely ever wallows in pseudo-new age territories.
