Papa Byrd

The Many Moods of Papa Byrd

Transistor Recordings

Not exactly the three faces of Eve, Christopher Hall and Scott Christopher as Papa Byrd are not the electronic schizophrenics the album title connotes. However, what this digital duo does suffer is a love of the past. Naming themselves after a character from Black Belt Jones, these guys are as funky as Jim Kelly with Technicolor afro puffs. While definitely mixing in lounge, Latin funk, d&b, and downtempo elements, you can feel the spirit of Curtis Mayfield (with a touch of Charlie Palmieri) dripping through every breakbeat. This is a blaxploitation good time, something to add a little soul to your chill session. Peace, love, and soul, party people.
