Cecil

Electric Love Vol. 1

Serenitia

Subdued and idiosyncratic rap, based around gentle rhythms and simple piano and guitar backdrops. Apparently a staple of his local “open mic” scene, Cecil’s music is basic and lightly structured, leaving much room for both vocal improvisations and musical variations. At his best, such as on “Soon” and the title track, he is warm and full sounding with an air of relaxed playfulness about him. Elsewhere, on the humorous and semi-pornographic “For Play?” and the R&B/Timabaland-pastiche “Actions Speak,” he leans a bit over into the more banal sides of things. Still, Cecil has come up with a considered and promising first album, with a few moments of real beauty thrown in.
