Who would’ve thought the guys who performed the songs to Jackass would come up with something of any musical relevance at all? Well not me, for sure. But there you go. CKY have taken a sharp turn away from their regular energetic skate-punk to come up with what is – and I kid you not – one of the top albums of the year.
CKY don’t trade in every last bit of their skate-punk on here, but they’ve come upon a whole different approach to it, a much darker and unsettling tone that references Soundgarden as much as it does Hot Water Music. Shying away from the clichés of contemporary metal, CKY brings an openendedness to the table along with an audience-confronting presence that’s entirely modern and entirely appropriate in this setting.
From the cyclical, churning opener “Escape From Hellview” to the Blondie-meets-Faith No More disco-metal of “Plastic Plan,” CKY never loose focus and never stands still, always challenging the (mis)conceptions of what skate-punk is and should be. A beautiful, huge and brave album, Infiltrate. Destroy. Rebuild is one of this year’s most stunning releases.
