Lanky

Inner Onwriter

Imposter

Lanky has come up with a lovely debut album of mainstream DIY pop, recorded in his basement with a little help from his oh-so-talented friends. While Inner Onwriter showcases Lanky’s immense songwriting chops, it also proves he is a hugely competent performer, draping his pop songs in clever, 1980s-tinged arrangements, invoking the spirit of a more organic Tears For Fears, or, on a song like “Sympathy,” Matt Johnson’s The The. It’s a jangly and dreamy set, one that begs to be listened to over and over again, always inching closer to cracking the icy calculations with which Lanky embellishes his music.
