A Perfect Circle

Thirteenth Step

Virgin

With Thirteenth Step, A Perfect Circle has created a mellower album than their previous effort, Mer De Noms. It brings the riffs down to a more subdued sound, which, with its sardonic-narcissistic lyrics, invites you into a world where the mood changes with each song and you are introduced to a cathartic expression-session.

The album welcomes new band members Twiggy Ramirez (a.k.a Jeordie White) from Marilyn Manson and James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins. Former bassist Paz Lenchantin split to join Zwan and guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen left to join Queens of the Stone Age. Maynard James Keenan again bestows upon the listener his perfectly melodic voice, which the world will recognize from his tenure with Tool.

Opening track “The Package” has lines like, “I don’t need another friend / Comfort is a mystery / Crawling out of my own skin / Just give me what I came for / Then I’m out the door again.” Such lyrics reinforce the confidence in song writing evidenced througout this album.

Thirteenth Step could easily be played at a romantic dinner with your soul mate or during the seconds before we each meet our maker.
