Fu Manchu

Go For It… Live!

Steamhammer / SPV

With more than a decade’s worth of stoner metal and biker rawk to look back upon, it’s about time the great Fu Manchu finally got around to releasing a live disc. This mammoth two-disc set more than makes up for the time it’s taken them to pull this one out. Go For It is a convincing testament to their stature as one of the most solid live bands out there today. The 22-track, 95-minutes long set documents their 2002 tour of the US and Europe, and culls tracks from all eras of the band, underlining the sheer consistent quality of their output and their continued relevance on the stoner scene.

New drummer Scott Reeder does a fine job of filling in for Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork, who jumped ship just prior to this tour. But it’s the pummeling, filthy riffage of Scott Hill and Bob Balch that really defines the monster rawk of Fu Manchu, especially in a live context where songs are stretched and pulled in new and strange directions. Regarded as a career overview, this is a fine introduction to the band, although older fans are likely to be most thrilled by this, seeing that the band’s studio albums have generally failed to live up to the great live experience that this band represents.
