Ah the drum solo. The long time fixture of jam bands and stoner rock is currently being thrown on avant-noise display via Nervous Cop’s debut. The result is a mixed bag, and is completely gratuitous. The songs here consist of two opposing drums, occasional harp and minimal electronics. The longer ones (“Ill Pearls” and “Frank vs. Frank”) have a chance to evolve beyond the simple percolating coffeepot chorus of the shorter tracks. Their length also gives these songs the opportunity to build almost to a sustained melody. They never actually reach that point, but the expectation makes for an interesting listen.
The shorter tracks run into a rather odd problem for me: they conjure up Elmer Fudd, or any other doomed Loony Tunes patsy for that matter, taking their requisite tumble down a long flight of stairs. Seriously, this is the stuff Carl W. Stalling built a career around. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, just that Nervous Cop needs to contract out this album to an animation studio specializing in pratfalls and they’ll be set for life.
