Go Betty Go

Worst Enemy

Side One Dummy

Go Betty Go is an all-female punk outfit reminiscent of a beefed up Go-Gos, a speedier L7, or a more straight forward and talented Bikini Kill. Their songs are turbo-charged rock, with lots of singable hooks and choruses. The overall feel of Worst Enemy is one of “us against the world.”

Go Betty Go will thus appeal to fans of no frills punk rock. I personally like my punk rock angular and arty, but I am able to appreciate what Go Betty Go is doing here. Their guitars are powerful, tuneful and drive with ferociousness. The drums are played well and hit hard, as does the bass (although I would like to have had it more up in the mix). The vocalist sings very well, and occasionally screams in protest, but the vocals are way too loud in the mix. It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s just that the guitars are way cooler, and they should have been the stars of the mix.

In short, this EP is a fun little rocker, and this band provides a nice alternative role model for young female musicians inundated with images of Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears.
