I On U

Favoured Nations

Neal Schon may have been busy seeing Journey inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, working on a new Journey album and touring with his side project Soul Sirkus, but he still managed to find time to record his sixth solo instrumental album, the eclectic I On U. But it’s one for the purists only, with the majority of tracks – except “Burning Bridges” and “Taken There” – straying from the melodic rock of Journey and Soul Sirkus. Instead, Schon proves his virtuoso skills in a variety of styles, covering funk (“Loner’s Dream”), rock (“Blue Passion”) and even techno (“The Chamber”).

Journey fans who have not followed Schon’s three-decade career may not find much of interest here, but the chance to hear Schon’s incredible technique and ability expressed in an experimental environment is worth more than just a cursory listen.
