Who Killed…The Zutons

Epic/Deltasonic

You don’t need me to tell you that Liverpool has always been a place of musical innovation. The city seems again to be specializing in genre-defying bands, with the success of The Coral and now The Zutons. The latter crosses over many styles on Who Killed…The Zutons, but with the talent of vocalist and chief songwriter Dave McCabe and the presence of former Lightning Seeds front man Ian Broudie, a memorable melody is never far away, as the brilliant “Pressure Point” and “You Will You Won’t” emphatically demonstrate.

The acoustic pop of “Confusion” maintains the high standard, with the band’s excellent saxophonist, Abi Harding, providing some inspired flourishes. The alt. country of “Remember Me” provides further evidence of the band’s ability to switch genres with ease. Yet, this weird and wonderful collection is no disorderly collection of songs with little identity – quite the opposite.

A quirky British charm and some radio-friendly hooks maintain the interest throughout, making Who Killed…The Zutons a surprisingly eclectic yet delightful hit.
