More Than This

Foreverything Records

Overtly evangelical Christian music isn’t usually at the top of my playlist, but I’ll gladly make an exception for Jon Abel’s More Than This. With lyrics primarily about his devotion to God, the Dallas-based singer/songwriter should easily prove popular in the burgeoning Christian rock-pop scene; he may even convert mainstream fans, thanks to some truly memorable material.

Along with the punchy “Now I Know,” the anthemic title track is as catchy a song as you will hear all year. The melodic “Most High” is passionate and heartfelt, while “Greatest Reward” is a soaring, gloriously powerful song that captivates, even if you are not a committed Christian. But the album’s standout has to be the beautifully arranged ballad “Lay Me Down,” a song that encapsulates Abel’s faith and demonstrates the sheer quality on display throughout. The magic touch of producer Cary Pierce adds to Abel’s vocal talent and songwriting skills.

Whatever your religious views, there’s no denying that More Than This is a stunning independent release. Highly recommended.
