Rodrigo y Gabriela

ATO

Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero began their strange musical journey together playing in a thrash band in their native Mexico. When the speed metal project, Tierra Acida, ran its course in 1997 the two friends unplugged their guitars and continued on. An acoustic duo with Spanish flamenco flavor they may be, but unlike any acoustic or Latin artist anyone has ever heard before.

The two guitar virtuosos have very different styles of playing – Rodrigo plays clean and fast, whereas Gabriela claws and pounds away on her instrument in a manner that is virtually impossible for the eye to follow – that compliment one another in a completely unique demonstration of thrash acoustic Mexican metal. As if to be explicit as to where their inspiration lies, the pair have included covers of both Led Zeppelin (“Stairway To Heaven”) and Metallica (“Orion”). As titillating as those songs are, it is in their originals that Rodrigo y Gabriela show what they are capable of. “Diablo Rojo” is as badass as anything Brazil’s Sepultura ever wrote and all of the percussion you hear is done by the pair on the guitar!

This self-titled release comes with a DVD full of live footage, candid interviews, and a lesson-filled tutorial where the two attempt to teach their original methods of playing to the viewer. Even if you aren’t a guitarist it’s worth giving the tutorial a view just to see their style broken down.

This music is some of the most original, inspiring examples of song writing you will ever come across!
