The Dead Betties

Fuck You Avril, You’re in the Army Now

“Suspicious Package,” the opening song on The Dead Betties’ Fuck You Avril, You’re in the Army Now is so damned good that I was bursting to hear the rest of the album. A riot grrrl punk rock jam set to a ’50s girl group groove – it had me from the first drum beat. The singer’s voice reminded me of Amy Gore (Gore Gore Girls), or Theo Kogan (Lunachicks, Theo & the Skyscrapers).

Imagine my surprise when I checked out the liner notes to find the names of the band members: Josh, Derek, and Eric. There’s not a babe in the bunch!

My surprise quickly turned to frustration as the perfection of that opening song faded with each subsequent track. From club beats to ill-advised rapping, the album that started off so promising turned into a huge disappointment. The only time it ever piqued my interest again was when they offered up a dirty rock cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.”

At least it’s not a total loss. I found one great song for my iPod.
