Fashion 101: A Crash Course in Clothing

With Fashion 101, Zest Books delivers another terrific guide for enterprising young women. This comprehensive and fun volume lives up to its title and introduces readers to he intricacies of women’s fashion, including definitions, history, and descriptions. Most of the not-so-common entries also include simple but effective illustrations. I don’t know how many times I found myself saying, “So that’s what (insert clothing name here) looks like.” Information about each item includes “who made them hot” and historical factoids like how Tommy Hilfiger got started reselling bell-bottoms to wannabe hippies outside New York City.

Best of all, Fashion 101 includes tips on how to rock each item. Found a great smoking jacket at the thrift shop? Pair it with your favorite stovepipe pants, or better yet, cigarette pants. I didn’t even know there was a difference before I read this book! Now I’m giving my wife fashion advice and she hates it. That is reason enough for me to recommend this book to every married guy or father of teen-aged girls. Annoying the women you love with fashion trivia is a singular, unexplored joy for many men. Just be careful. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, especially in the world of women’s fashion. Fashion 101 could also make a great gift for fashion-minded young ladies, especially those with an eye for design.
