There’s a steady stream of semi-identical 21st century punk bands parading through my mail slot. Broadway Calls is the latest, and they arrived with an impressive pedigree. While they are on the same label as Green Day, Pinhead Gunpowder and the Soviettes, I can’t see this trio pushing rock and roll in any new directions. They’re not bad; they just sound like a dozen other bands. While their songwriting is a nice mix of teen lust and politically appropriate complaints, there’s no song that stands out on the disc. Josh Baird’s drumming is energetic, vocals and guitars by Ty Vaughn and Matt Koenig have the playful timing a great band needs, but much as I want to like these guys, they play fine but can’t spin out that grabbing a hook or innovative sound. Even the album title lacks pizzazz; they could have at least called it “Oregon,” which at least is in large letters on the cover. Move along, nothing to see here.
