Spring Tigers

Mini-LP

Bright Antenna

Happy upbeat pop is still a major export of Athens, GA, and this five man electrical band is no exception. Spring Tigers has a new EP, and it opens strong with a potential hit: “The Car Song” zips along with four-part harmony and a pop-filled backing from a pair of guitars, a bass, and a minimal drum kit. “Stars Are Dancing All Around Me,” sings Kris Barratt with the energy of a mid-career Sparks, but he maintains an earnestness that says “I’d rather be in love than do standup comedy.” Other energetic pop tunes follow. “Just Suggesting” shows they’ve been to the UK with references to Tesco and “going to the gastropub.” There’s an urgent punk-influenced vocal in “New Improved Formula,” but these boys can do slow dance as well, with the dreamy “Strip Malls in the Sun” putting suburban sprawl in the best possible light. This band has some real potential and with a few more years touring and recording, they just might be the next overnight sensation.
