The new Jackass flick is out, and this time it arrived in oh-so-trendy 3D. This either means 3D is nearly done with its 2010 novelty phase, or it might actually become the standard of film entertainment for the new generation. I haven’t seen the film, but the soundtrack came my way, and it’s not a bad mix tape. We open with an operatic based theme song by Squeak E. Clean called “Corona.” It vaguely reminds me of the opening chords from The Simpsons, but it’s over quick enough and we are on to some respectable if not earth-shattering rock and roll. Twisted Sister returns from suspended animation with the New Wave-influenced “The Kids Are Back.” I think they’ve become their parents, but the guitars are in tune and the lyrics rate a “Meh plus”.
The best song comes from Karen O – her country ballad encapsulates the Jackass concept with “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough.” Good advice if you’re sitting on a port-a-potty waiting for three sticks of dynamite to light off. Another band from the dusty days of the first Bush administration is Weezer. They seem a bit gray and reminisce about hackysack and techno and complain about “Kids These Days.” More in line with the film’s concept is “Party in My Pants” by Roger Alan Wade, and Roger Miller’s ancient hit “You Can’t Roller-skate in a Buffalo Herd.” It was laugh in the ’60s, and I can visualize what sort of stunt it illustrates on screen.
OK, so some of these bands are past their Sell By date, but we’re not looking for cutting edge sounds right here, are we? “Respectable” and “listenable” are the key word on this collection, and you’ll get some material from The Blasters and Gang Green and the wonderfully named “Cock Sparrer.” It’s not bad for a drive time disc, and a better than average backdrop as you watch wannabee stuntmen poking their eyes out.
