Yoga Hosers

Kevin Smith’s latest film Yoga Hosers takes the lives of convenience store clerks to Manitoba, Canada and throws in some horror elements. I haven’t seen the film, but I’m sure it’s going to have a fair amount of silliness and a ton of pop culture references. It wouldn’t be a Kevin Smith film if it didn’t.
The pop culture references are strong with the Yoga Hosers soundtrack. There is a digital release with ten tunes on it, but I got the pretty pink 10-inch record to review. All of the tunes on the disc are covers and all feature lead vocals from Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith. If those names look a bit familiar, they should, Lily-Rose is Captain Jack Sparrow’s daughter and Harley Quinn is the offspring of Silent Bob.
These tunes are fun and silly. They’re not technically great. The version of the Styx chestnut, “Babe”, sounds like it was recorded on a good night at the karaoke bar. The Anthrax tune, “I’m the Man #1” (Censured) comes alive as a Manitoba rap party after a few too many Molsons.
With the film set in Canada, it’s only appropriate that both of the country’s national anthems are included. “O’ Canada”, (the national anthem you hear played when a Canadian gets a medal at the Olympics) gets a trashed up, gutter punk rendition. It’s the same treatment “Stompin’” Tim Connor’s, “The Hockey Song” gets. “The Hockey Song” is the unofficial national anthem you hear at hockey games and sports bars across the provinces. When these tunes play, don’t take a knee or stand at attention, get a mosh pit going.
