Anson Funderburgh & Sam Myers
That’s What They Want
Black Top
This is some swinging stuff. Funderburgh handles the guitar and Myers does all of the singing on thirteen shuffling or rocking blues tunes. Myers’ vocals are huge, warm, clear, and full of the pleasure that an expression of talent can give. He plays a really good harp too.
As for Funderburgh, I admit that this is my first hearing of him, and I like it. A lot. You’d have a hard time finding a more pure, honking, maple-neck Strat tone, even whilst taking tricorder readings on the funky stench generated by Jimmy Vaughn. Funderburgh plays so cleanly and simply you might think it’s time to quit the slave job and start a blues band – until you realize that you wouldn’t sound anywhere near as good if you copped him in every way. It’s just one of those magical style things, I guess… or maybe it’s his perfect delay timing. The sucker can even play good slide.
These two dudes really complement each other, and the wrenching blues groove (yay, drummer!) is pretty good on this disc, as is the selection of tunage and sidemen, making it get a generous blue asterisk beside it in my book. Black Top, 2103 N.Decatur Rd., Suite 210, Decatur, GA 30033
