You know what? Once you get past the complete lack of melody, death metal really isn’t too bad!
Well, that was my cheap attempt to promote the scene. Let’s face it, this type of music has gone underground again. Nobody listens to death metal, with the exception of the elite few who genuinely love it. Does that mean that you shouldn’t listen to death metal? Of course not. Go out right now and buy the new Incantation album. Longtime fans of the band won’t be disappointed by the heavy guitars, 1,000-riffs-a-minute, and vocals so deep and guttural it reminds you of the last time you drank too much.
This latest domestic release contains an EP originally released on Repulse records out of Spain. Now that all the people who paid tons of $$$ for the import are done smacking themselves on the forehead, let me add insult to injury by saying that the American release contains four tracks that were previously unavailable. Although the logistics were ruined by putting the “Outro” in the middle of the album, it still makes for an enjoyable death metal experience. Lots of grunts, dark imagery, and dedication to their original style will make this an enjoyable purchase for all the die-hard fans. Incantation still retains that low end-heavy style that will appeal to fans of groups like Suffocation and Cannibal Corpse. I’m not implying that these guys are copy cats, but there is no reason a fan of those two groups would not like an Incantation album. As for the few brave and bold out there that read this review on a whim, not knowing anything about death metal, this is a good album to try out. It’s got the most extreme music known to man, as well as a cover of Death’s “Scream Bloody Gore.” No matter who you are, if you don’t crave the extreme, then come no further. Relapse, P.O.
