Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci

Barafundle

Mercury

This is so Welsh. What makes something obviously from Wales? Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci is, in fact, from Wales, but there’s something additional, a subtle lilt and temperament to the music on here. In a lot of ways, Gorky’s shares many musical traits with James’ well-wrought pop sensibilities. If anything, they’re far more lush – Barafundle is full and well-produced. “Patio Song” begins with a strolling melody, and ends with a more jaunty coda, sung in Welsh (I imagine). Immediately following is “Better Rooms… “ where rich humming choruses stand out in a dizzying arrangement and provide subtle background for the lonely verses.

Still, the band has a few tricks up its sleeve. “Meiron Wyllt” could easily pass for a Brainiac track, at least until the jig kicks in and everything smoothes out to a scene green and pastoral, returning to pounding fuzz and hoots on occasion.

Sometimes things get a bit too sickly sweet for me, and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci often come perilously close to becoming something Ween has parodied. Fortunately, a short break finds me fascinated by Barafundle again, which means something has been done right.
