Bouncing Souls

with Inwoods, Jon Cougar Concentration Camp, & Blanks 77

Club Limelight, Melbourne, FL • 2.1.98

East Coast punk band Bouncing Souls rolled into town and stole the show, literally. While the other three bands tried to win the crowd, Bouncing Souls owned them. Running through the gamut of their extensive catalog, the band ripped through souls and sensitivities like a bulldozer.

Their non-tiring brand of punk is particularly edgy and aggressive. When asked to define this “East Coast” sound, guitarist Pete Steinkept said, “It’s easier to define the West Coast sound. We’re not that.”

They played barely forty-five minutes, and the audience certainly clamored for more, but the club seemed anxious to get the show over with and get the fans out.

The Inwoods opened, attracting their own legion of followers. This band has been around for a few years now, but they still can’t seem to get their act together. If they would tighten up their material and invest in some better peripherals, their shows would be much better. Musically, they’re top-notch.

Blanks 77 seemed to catch everyone off guard. Nobody was quite sure what to make of them. Their music was unsettling and unfocused, a sort of free-form punk-rock. In short, they sucked.

I had been waiting for a long time to hear Jon Cougar Concentration Camp. God, that has to be like the best name for a band I’ve ever heard. They took the stage while I was outside. When I got back in the club, a matter of no more than twenty minutes, JCCC was already done and their equipment cleared from the stage. Not only did I miss my chance to hear them, but everybody else got short-changed by a way-too-short set.

Brevard County residents should be grateful to Dave Brumlow for bringing great punk and hardcore shows to town. This place is way too sparse with its shows. ◼
