Richard Julian

Blackbird/Elektra

This is one of those records whose merits are hard to pin down in words. Julian has a great lyrical touch – something akin to a young Paul Simon. Like Simon, Julian can convey a great depth of meaning through the use of a few phrases: “now by the door/ she puts up the chain/ and finds herself asking/ was I just one more doorbell/ he rang and ran away laughing” (from “Move You”). The music is good, though hardly competition for Julian’s message.
