There’s something about a pop band with a girl singer that catches my attention, especially if, like Leigh Nash, she’s really good looking and purrs like an angel. “Anything” is pure melodic pouting, and “Kiss Me” is sweet and sexy, plain and simple. They do an interesting arrangement of Pablo Neruda’s well-known poem “Puede Escribir Los Versos Mas Tristes.” Matt Slocum, guitarist and chief songwriter, with his beautiful string arrangements and Johnny Marr guitar tendencies, seems to have a knack for the pop concerto. Nash has an appealing “Patsy Cline” quality to her vocal style, which adds depth and purity to Slocum’s lyrics. Even though this disc is still overshadowed by the success of their previous release, Beautiful Mess, it still has a few pop gems that are worth seeking out.
