High Performance

The Eclectic Sound of Vienna

Instinct

High Performance offers a brief overview of some of the underground sounds coming out of Austria. It’s far from all-encompassing yet scratches the surface of something a tad more refined. What’s even more appealing is that while the musical styles vary from downtempo jazz to D&B, the production quality remains intact. Similarly the compositions are simple and unburdened. The music speaks volumes even without the over the top production and retains a unique flow and continuity. There’s a couple of names that anoraks will recognize, such as Dorfmeister, with partner Huber recorded under the alias `Tosca’. Track # one “Fuck Dub Work Song,” wrangles a jazzy keyboard melody and sets the tone for a moody stroll through Vienna’s largely untapped rhythm chambers. Other accomplished artists included are Count Basic and MC Sultan. Also worthy of mention is “Closer To God” a D&B classic by Urbs & Chaos Vs. Headhunter. Another strong release from Instinct: the label that made Moby a household word. Recommended. Instinct Records, 26 W. 17th St. #502-A, New York, NY 10011
