Not the Same Old Blues Crap

Various Artists

Fat Possum

This is to mainstream blues what punk is to arena rock. Raw, primitive, and stripped of pretense and pomp, this is downright down-home. What the artists on this record lack in chops, they more than make up for in attitude. Usually bad attitude. When T-Model Ford sings “I’m gonna beat yo ass” in the opening track “I’m Insane,” he sure sounds like he means it. I’ve been a T-Model fan for a while now. There’s 11 great cuts in all from R. L. Burnside, Jelly Roll Kings, Robert Cage, Hasil Adkins, and others. Particularly impressive are the Junior Kimbrough tracks. I gotta get more of that. Jaded as I am, I rarely get as excited as I am over this collection from Fat Possum. Fat Possum Records, 603 S. 16th St., Oxford, MS 38655
