Angry youth punk rock with a violin.
No, after hearing “Interlewd,” make that “chamber orchestra with punk rock delusions.” “Interlewd” could make it on the classical stations, or perhaps as a theme to a daytime soap opera, and no one would ever know about the angry punk rock these frustrated youths from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. In general, their music is familiar, down-home punk, which leads more towards angry dissonance, rather than upbeat happy guitars and smarmy vocals. No, no, this is mean, upset, downer punk. I’m listening to “Someday” right now and getting really depressed. But you can slam to it, so there’s a ray of sunshine in there somewhere. “Get Off the Couch” is kind of hopeful, too. But “2 Quarts” and “American’t” (neat title) are pretty depressing.
I don’t know, though, whether I should praise Yellow Card or excoriate them for covering Billy Joel’s “For the Longest Time.” I hate Billy Joel, and would dance a jig were he to die at the hand of an obsessed stalker. It’s a punk cover, but it’s still Billy Joel, and, and… Excuse me, I have to vomit…
Right. Yellow Card redeem themselves with some great, heavier guitars and odd gurgling noises in between songs, and that they thank Black Sabbath and AC/DC for inspiration. Takeover Records, 341 Royal Tern Rd., Ponte Verde Beach, FL 32082
