The definition of a remix album is growing hazier by the minute, so I don’t feel lost not being familiar with the original versions of these tunes. Helping things out is that the Dylan Group seems to be heavily into the transmutation act – their previous album, which featured the starting points for these remixes, contains an interpretation of John Cage’s “4’ 33” ,” retitled “3’ 09” .” Sort of an inside joke, but pretty hilarious if you’re familiar with Cage’s work.
Back to the album – nine tunes that make you feel submerged or orbiting (take your choice), utilizing a lot of organic sources and bashing them upside the head with digital trickery. Drawn-out moans like stretched wind chimes sit complacently beside stuttering passages that will make you think your CD player is dying. Not quite relaxing, and not quite unnerving, this is recommended nonetheless. Plenty of vibraphones too, for you Tortoise fans.
