Dance of the Drunken Master
What’s in a name? The Groove Collective have it covered! They got groove and an expansive melting pot of NYC musicians whose backgrounds are as varied as their disciplines — including a former member of Steely Dan and some of New York’s hottest club musicians.
The Dance is a myriad of moods and rhythms — the hip-hop smooth of “Bionic,” acid jazz slick of “Out the Door,” and the first single, “Deal With It,” whose roots are deep in old school funk. However, you find the dance is not yet over when the fusion jazz samplings of the title track take over. You weave in and out of a daydream with an almost new age spaciness on tracks like “Floating” and “Peep Show” — all of which demonstrate Groove Collective’s depth and versatility.
The band has been hard at work these past few years, spreading the groove at major jazz festivals and touring with top acts (most recently the Dave Matthews Band).
