King’s X has always been an interesting to me. Interesting, in my opinion, to have never fully tapped into their creative abilities. The three members are all excellent musicians and their discs have always enjoyed top-notch production. But they can’t seem to find a style to stick with. Don’t get me wrong, I love to hear bands trying different styles, but when you repeat this over and over, it defeats the purpose of being “different.” Mainly, they focus on power rock and Top 40 dribble. The latter, for me, is really irritating because these guys are better than that. On Tape Head, the first song, “Groove Machine,” brings back memories of my favorite King’s X record, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska. On the other hand, “Cupid “ sounds like a Spice Girls reject. It is that cheesy. If you are a huge King’s X fan, than I am sure that this record will satisfy you. For me, I’ll keep listening to Gretchen.
