Modulations: Cinema for the Ear

Original Soundtrack Recording

Caipirinha

The riveting new documentary, Modulations, could be subtitled “Everything you’ve always wanted to know about electronic music but were afraid to ask” for its comprehensive history of electronic music from Industrial and techno to Jungle and House. The soundtrack collection focuses on dance-oriented tracks that stand as mini-paradigms of their representative sub-genres. Giorgio Moroder’s Euro-disco mix of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” married pulsating electronic beats to an erotic mantra, laying the foundation for endless musical mutation. Afrika Bambaata’s beat-synth melange, “Planet Rock,” is here, along with Juan Atkins’ (as Model 500) remix of his pivotal techno hit “No UFOs.” Modulations provides informative entertainment for the novice of electronic music and a fine “best of” sampler for the aficionado.
