I was excited about this coming out, because I knew it was Blake from Jawbreaker’s new band. Having people from Texas is the Reason and Handsome involved didn’t hurt either, but the Jawbreaker link is definitely what drew me in. Blake’s lyrical style is the same, like an old friend with a fresh heartache, but that’s about where the similarities end. The gritty, melodic, poppish punk that was evolving in Jawbreaker has been traded in for another evolution, one that is cleaner, less aggressive, but still emotionally powerful. Drums, bass, guitar, plus some keyboards, all creating a sound probably more palatable to pop kids than punk kids. Expand those horizons.
