Train is the self-titled debut from this San Francisco-based band. Their music brings to mind many guitar bands that are the cornerstone of the classic rock radio format. Train is an even mix of hard-driving rock and ballads, with influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Train creates a very spacious sound with layered acoustic and electric guitars as well as an occasional harmonica and mandolin, which contribute to the album’s blues/country feel. The only diversion they take from straight-ahead rock and roll comes in the form of a funky groove on “hidden” Track Twelve. Lyrically, Train consists of stories from the American landscape, such as growing up, lost love, resistance to change, and the need for acceptance. Fans of traditional rock and roll will appreciate this impressive debut.
