Corey Harris

Greens from the Garden

Alligator

Greens from the Garden is Corey Harris’ third album. He is a little-known, young blues musician that I was lucky enough to become familiar with by way of my former local college radio station. A couple years ago, they were playing “God Don’t Ever Change” from his second release, Fish Ain’t Bitin’ . That second album and this one are very similar. His style is quite eclectic as far as blues musicians go; sounding at times more like a New Orleans jazz band. He relies less on his trumpet on this album and more on a menagerie of other instruments, backing vocals and harmonies. Despite the generous supply of experimental sounds, Greens from the Garden is the most traditional blues album he has recorded to date. His raspy lyrics are intelligent, focusing on cultural and social issues in a positive light. Harris’ style most closely resembles Delta Blues, both acoustic and electric, but the music is definitely all his own.
